10 Reasons To Stay Loyal To Nintendo

Here's 10 reasons to stay loyal to Nintendo, put together by GamesRadar...

#1. Nintendo still has Miyamoto, and his work slate is now clear

Oh Shigeru, how we've missed you. Of course, Nintendo's resident genius has never gone away; in fact he's been at the forefront of the Wii's push to world domination throughout. But while the grinning pixie of games design has been instrumental in endearing the Wii's concept to the world - Come on, Wii Sports IS fun, however uncool it is to admit that these days - his output has been rather different to that of old.

He has however, still got it. He might not have had the same directorial role on Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy as he has had on those franchises in the past, but his touch can still be felt throughout both games. And the best news? He's finished his initial run of Wii games. Those misinterpreted quotations pertaining to Miyamoto's lack of ideas? They just meant that the initial concepts he came up with to show off the Wii's capabilities are all done and he's now moving on to other projects. We already know about Pikmin 3, and he's talked about a theoretical Punchout!! as well, so hopefully he's moving in a more hardcore-friendly direction now that everyone knows what the Wii is about.

#2. First-party WiiWare is happening, and that has massive potential

While WiiWare has been a bit of a mixed bag so far - LostWinds FTW, Star Soldier R FTNotsomuch - but Reggie has quietly confirmed that Nintendo is definitely working on more in-house downloadable titles. The obvious potential of this? New 2D Mario and Zelda games.

Mega Man 9 and Bionic Commando: Rearmed have already been met with immense love from fans and press alike, so Nintendo would be insane not to add to the glorious return of 2D. Let's face it, that kind of material made the company, and nothing would be more reasurring to the hardcore than the release of more of it. We seriously wouldn't be surprised to see this happen.

#3. Wario Land: Shake It!

Okay, so it might not be Kid Icarus or F-Zero, but just think about what the new Wario Land represents. It's a straight sequel to one of Nintendo's most loved hardcore franchises. It's that most staple of old-school, hardcore Nintendo game styles, the 2D platformer. And it's got the presitige factor of coming out as a major retail disc release. All of that means that someone at Nintendo seriously has the right idea. With this kind of thinking going on behind the scenes, the old Nintendo is far from lost.

#4. Nintendo happily employs a 55-year old man who behaves like this

#5. Third-party developers are seriously getting their **** together

So Nintendo doesn't have a huge amount of hardcore material on the way that we know of, but forget the old "Third-party Wii support sucks" cliche and look at the reality. Madworld, Fatal Frame IV, Dead Rising, Overlord, The Conduit, Mushroom Men, Deadly Creatures, Spore, Facebreaker, Sam & Max, Tenchu... They're all coming to the Wii, more than a couple of them are exclusives designed specifically for the hardware. And none of them are mini-game collections. The tide, it finally does seem to be turning...

#6. It's easy to forget how many good games are already out for the Wii

No More Heroes, Zak & Wiki, Boom Blox, Okami, Super Paper Mario, Excite Truck, Guilty Gear, We Ski, Bully: Scolarship Edition, Blast Works, Battalion Wars 2, Fire Emblem... If you only concentrate on the negative, you'll only see the negative.

#7. Wii MotionPlus could turn out to be really good

We know, okay? We know you want 1:1 lightsabers. So do we. But while none of the demos we've so far seen for the Wii remote's new add-on have been any kind of substitute - bar, of course, the potential for playing Wii Sports Resort fencing while squinting and going "Vwumm" - think about why you're frustrated by that. It's because that little white LEGO brick has the potential to bring about some amazing experiences.

The kind of sophistication in control that Wii MotionPlus promises just isn't necessary for mini-game waggle-pap. It's purpose is to bring about the kind of experiences we all imagined when the Wii was announced in 2005. It's been a long time coming, but it has the potential to kick off a renaissance.

#8. Reggie

Look at the man. He's carved out of solid kebab meat and could crush your skull in one hand, without even pausing to bite off the head of the sheep he's holding in the other. You want to be on his side.

#9. Until recently, Nintendo hasn't been skimping on the hardcore games.

Think about it. We've already had Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Mario Kart, Smash Bros and a new, vastly under-rated addition to the Excite franchise. And several of those titles have been the best editions of their respecive franchises we've ever had. If Nintendo hadn't been banging on about the expanded audience at the same time, would we really have had such a problem with the company's hardcore output?

Yes, some new IPs would be good - Where have you gone, Project H.A.M.M.E.R. and Disaster? - but we haven't been missing out on the stuff we've always loved. There are tons more Nintendo franchises just waiting for a Wii outing. Generational staples like F-Zero and Star Fox still haven't made an appearance and would work beautifully with the Wii remote, and we are still stubbornly adamant that Kid Icarus is on the way. Plus at this stage Nintendo can't go back on the repeated statement that the Mario and Zelda teams are hard at work. We haven't had two Mario home console games in one generation since the NES, so that's definitely a big deal.

#10. Cammie reminds us of a Wallace & Gromit character. And we like Wallace & Gromit

She's also a bit like a Koopa Trooper, according to Matt, which proves her hardcore franchise loyalty.

So what do you think? Have we convinced you? Do we sound like crazy fanboys hanging on to the last scrap of hope we can muster? Hit up the forums and let us know.

RE: 10 Reasons To Stay Loyal To Nintendo

You're totally right. People seem to forget all that Nintendo has given them this generation as well as all the good games that ARE avaliable on the Wii.

Who cares if we haven't played NMH or Okami or any of the good 3rd party games, we NEED ANOTHER ZELDA,MARIO OR METROID!
^-- that was a sarcastic comment

RE: 10 Reasons To Stay Loyal To Nintendo

I'm going to wait and see what Nintendo comes up with for their next system.  Maybe they'll go back to basics and we'll get a game system that can give us quality and fun like the SNES.

I have issues with a couple of the points above, but I will focus on 1 and that would be #6. It's easy to forget how many good games are already out for the Wii.

The problem isn't that the Wii doesn't have a number of games that are really good, the issue is that the vast majority of Wii owners aren't buying them.  The first two examples were No More Heroes and Zak & Wiki, which sold terribly, and many of the others were ports.

The Wii has the power to recreate amazing games, but Nintendo doesn't seem to have a standard of quality that transfers to the 3rd party companies.  If they had that, then we'd all see some AAA games on the system now and for the future.

and whose fault is that? All those 'Nintendo fans' who didn't buy quality games and instead choose to buy all the crap and whine about it. Just cause they sold badly isn't any excuse for any not to buy them.

What are you talking about? The Wii has plenty of quality and fun titles, and plenty more on the way. Oh and I highly doubt they would go back to basics, not when they have the casual crowd in their back pocket.

Exactly, they have them. They just need to release a game every so often to keep them happy.

I've been loyal to Nintendo since the start, and that won't be changing anytime soon. But it's nice to know about all this new stuff. Smile

Now name another 5Wink

One of them is multiplatform and 3 are third party, isn't this about Nintendo themselves?

Leaving just 2.

"we'll get a game system that can give us quality and fun", I don't see anything about just Nintendo games. I honestly couldn't give two shits if a game is first or third-party, as long as the quality is there. Oh, and I'm also looking forward to De Blob and Star Wars Unleashed, but I think I might get Star Wars for my 360 instead. Smile

Considering the whole thing is about staying loyal to Nintendo...

Force Unleashed wii...it isn't even the game any more. Euphoria ftw.

RE: 10 Reasons To Stay Loyal To Nintendo

#1.
That is true, and hopefully Shiggy will deliver a great hardcore game that is CHALLENGING. That sort of game has been absent from Nintendo's first party titles since Echoes.

#2.
Super Metroid sequel, kthxbai.

#3.
I never liked the Wario Land games, so its hard for me to consider this game a good thing. It *should* be a WiiWare titles, it holds that sort of quality. I don't want to pay full price for a 2D side-scroller. WiiWare it, Nintendo.

#4.
Two Shiggy reasons on one list, not good enough.

#5.
Madworld - Interesting.
Fatal Frame IV - Interesting.
Dead Rising - Watered down, half-assed port. Get the 360 version.
Overlord - Potential.
The Conduit - Probably Wii Game of 09.
Mushroom Men - Haven't looked into this one much.
Deadly Creatures - No.
Spore -Get the PC version.
Facebreaker - Potential.
Sam & Max - PC.
Tenchu - Haven't looked into this much either.

#6
No More Heroes, Zack & Wiki, BWii, and Fire Emblem are the only games I am looking into buying. NMH and Fire Emblem are the only ones I probably will buy because I know I'll enjoy them.

#7
Sure it could turn out really good. But the killer word there is *could*, it's like me saying that Nintendo *could* announce a new hardcore title that offers a challenge by the end of this generation but it doesn't mean it'll happen. MotionPlus is a slight positive that carries potential to succeed or fall horribly on it's face.

#8
I. Hate. Reggie. For having him on this list, it loses all respect.

#9
Super Mario Galalxy - Great game, but far FAR too easy to finish.
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princes - You've heard my thoughts on this game plenty enough.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Brilliant game, still best on the Wii. But far too easy for lack of an actual hard mode.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Solid game, not as good as Melee but still a good game. I'll pay this one.
Mario Kart Wii - Always has been nothing more than a party game, but I felt Mario Kart Wii was rushed.

#10
Cammie, more annoying than Reggie. But at least we know puppies are cute now. Oh, and it's Koopa Troopa.

Anyway, pretty subpar list of reasons to stay loyal to Nintendo. Two Miyamoto ones, one Reggie one and a Cammie one. That's four of the ten based on Nintendo personalities.

RE: 10 Reasons To Stay Loyal To Nintendo

Going by Lemons list...

Madworld - Interesting.

Fatal Frame IV - Interesting but was ruined by bad controls and hasn't even been confirmed to be released outside of Japan.

Dead Rising - Watered down, half-assed port. Get the 360 version.

Overlord
- Potential. Yet not great.

The Conduit - Probably Wii Game of 09. Is there any other wii games being released in 09? >_<

Mushroom Men - Looks a bit poor and repetitive.

Deadly Creatures - Looks okay but nothing I would buy.

Spore - Get the PC version. This was cancelled I think.

Facebreaker - Potential however it gets repetitive and boring and is supposed hard if you consider it's family friendly appearance.

Sam & Max - PC.

Tenchu - Could be okay but Tenchu games of recent have lacked quality.

No, my point was that when really good games don't sell, the developers have less reason to make those same really good games for the same system.  In the end it all comes down to money.

well if people would just stop sitting around b*tching about the games that aren't there and went out to buy some of these great games then maybe companies would be more willing to develop for the Wii. I mean, if I saw that Wii Play has sold millions of copies and Okami has only sold a couple hundred thousand I'd develop more games like that instead of good games like Okami.
And I bet you that more than half the people out there who are whining about this 'there's no hardcore games on wii coming out' haven't even touched most of the good games on Wii.

I'll still buy good games for my Wii, but it's a useless sole-console in my eye.
