Connectivity Guide *updated*

Ok I decided to do this in it's own thread.

(Disclaimer: This information I supply to you in good faith, and I will note now, some internet providers, AOL in particular do not like there users 'sharing' there internet connections with more that one device, and have there own solutions *at an inflated price* for such things.
Secondly this information is speculating that the USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter mentioned by Nintendo plugs into a USB port on Wii, if this is not the case and this is infact a USB Wireless Ethernet adapter that is already on sale for use with the DS Wifi service then please disregard everything in a blue font. P.S i hope this helps.)

Following is a short *hopefully* guide on connecting Wii and DS for internet play/Wiiconnect24/DS-Wii.

Firstly, There are two common types of broadband
ADSL, where your internet comes down an old fashioned copper phone line.
Cable, where your internet comes down a fiber optic link.
to be refered to as BBA (ADSL) and BBC(Cable, not british TV)
Your devices *pc/laptop/etc* connect to these slightly differently.

BBA uses 4 core standard phone line with *RJ9?* connecter, to an adsl modem which in turn can have either an RJ45 ethernet, or USB connection into your devices. (Not for getting to use your microfilters on the terminal the line comes into your home.)

BBC connect directly from the cable to a Cable Modem, your device then connect via RJ45 Catagory 5 network cable. *Some newer cable modems can use USB to connect to your devices instead*

Wii.
Nintendo's Wii will be able to connect via:
1 A Wireless router.*See Nintendo's Wifi site for details*
There are two types of wireless router.
a. Wireless router for BBA connection with build in ADSL modem
this connects directly to your phone line *not forgetting your filters*
b. Wireless router for BBC connection without build in modem, this connects to your cable modem in between the modem and your pc, and is only suitable for cable modems that use Cat 5 Ethernet cable and can't be used for cable modems that can only connect to your pc via USB.

2 Nintendo's USB adapter via your PC.
As described on the big N's wifi site, exactly as you would for the DS.
(NOTE OF CAUTION: this USB Device only Works on Windows XP)

3 A USB 2.0 ethernet adapter. *manufacured by the big N*
OK this option is exactly like OPTION 2, except your connecting Wii to either your PC or WIRED ROUTER via Cat 5 Ethernet cable.
If you connect via your PC, you will either need to enable internet connection shareing on a windows pc, or install routing software, for any home computer, this can be difficult to find.

Option 3 part 2 is how my Game Cube is hooked up to the net.
im not saying i could supply routing software but i might beable to point you in the right direction.

DS to Net

Using options 1 and 2 above only. either a wireless router directly of whichever type you need for you type of connection, or the nintendo usb pc adapter.

Last but not least the DS will talk directly with Wii wirelessly, depending upon the Wii's wireless configuration for security. *See your Wii instruciton Manual, i haven't got my manual yet Toungue*

Although i can safley say *hopefully*, that it will use WEP wireless security.
and setting a 10 digit hexidecimal pass on both consoles should work fine.
eg. D038523852

Next a short piece on the pro's and con's

Presuming you already have broadband and are likely to have either BBA or BBC.

if you have BBA/BBC and don't yet have a Router, the cheepest and easyest way to connect is option 2 the N USB adapter.
However this only allows your DS and Wii to be 'online' while your computer is operational. i.e. unless your like me and your pc is on all of the time, you will not be able to utilse connect24 to fullest capacity, seen as DS demo's will download while Wii is in standby.

If you already have a Wired router, probably because your on BBC, although some BBA modems have Cat 5 output.
then it's a matter of logistics, as we don't yet know how much the USB 2.0 ethernet adapter is.
options 2 or 3 would be cheepest for you, but option 3 you could connect Wii directly to the router and be able to fully utilse connect24 with your pc off, your DS 'should' then be able to use Wii as a wireless access point for wifi gaming.

By far the most expencive route, *i know i have 3 wireless routers*.
is to connect wirelessly via a wireless router, that is the only con.
the pro's include easy to expand the network by adding wireless components ie psp, xbox360, wireless laptop, and or other future wireless devices, without tons of wires everywhere. and as the latest wireless routers run at speeds 3 to 4 times faster than the fastest home internet connections this shouldn't slow you down.
*there still not as quick as JaNET backbone *i miss uni* or some of the USA's backbone links.

you plug the wireless router into your nic (10/100/1000 network interface card) in your pc to set it up, then you move it away once you have set it's dialing funcitons and security WEP for the DS and probably for Wii, then everything connects to that wirelessly then on to the net. these also support a small number of individual RJ 45 Ethernet connectors so if you got a broadband addapter for the GC you can connect that up as well.

please refer back to top of post for disclaimer.

ADDITION.
DS and AOSS support.

this is a simple way of setting up a secure (still under debate) wi fi connection to a AOSS enabled router. made by buffalo inc. you can buy these routers at best buy and other places.

how it works.

after you have set up the router to connect to the net (via a wire) and your computer can connect. you can connect AOSS suported objects with out getting into the nitty gritty of ip addresses and WEP security codes.

heres how.

open up your DS wifi options

press the AOSS button on the Router, press the connect via AOSS option on your DS wifi screen. wait a few seconds, bamb the DS and Wii are on the same network and can talk directivly via the wireless router.

if a friend comes round with his DS. press the button on the router, select he option on DS. etc etc etc. now you all have wifi. Big Grin

*If you have any questions, then I will add a Faq section on the end, so feel free to PM me*

RE: Connectivity Guide

Anyone who creates a FAQ such as this will receive credit if it is made into an actual page, such as an expanded "Wii Specs" or "FAQs" on things like "How to connect your Wii to the internet" and "How to connect the Wii to a computer montior", etc.

RE: Connectivity Guide

Would you like some Graphics to go with it,

I'm a little tired right now i just couldn't sleep with writing this, I was going to edit it after the weekend when i have some time off work, add in some links to the big N's reletive pages, and some info links for people on AOL.

Aswell as a couple of reviews on some reliable Wireless routers.

And i was thinking of doing a box/flow diagram for each option. to try and make it a little clearer.

Anyway i hope it can be useful to someone, time for sleep, it's 4 40 am and im in work in a few hours.

quote

Not really a huge surprise, but Pokemon Battle Revolution allows players to use their Nintendo DS as a controller instead of the Wii remote. When using the DS you can select attacks using the touch screen and watch the battle play out on your TV. Pokemon Battle Revolution is also the first online game for the Wii and it comes out right around the Wii’s launch window in Japan and has a 2007 release date in North America.

so I guess that the manual with pok e mon BR will tell you, as i don't have one yet i can't really answer that, but i hope this helps you a little

RE: Connectivity Guide *updated*

yeah im kinda anxious to see that game when it arrives.
great guide smokey, i'm sure a lot of people will make good use of it Big Grin

so anyway i have the wi-fi connector, but i'm havin problems with it. Smokey, you look like you know a lot about networking, maybe you'll know! Toungue
So here's my setup:
Phone line --> DSL Router --> Main Computer (wifi connector is here)
I'm not using a router. I did have my connection shared, with two other computers connected to my main through two other network cards. The connection was bridged. The wifi connector doesn't like bridges, so it had to be deleted. So it let me instal, and I set it up just fine through the Wii and all. I was able to connect and update my Wii and use the shop channel and all, but when I register other people's Wii numbers, I never get a response back, and I know other people have registered mine but I haven't got any messages or anything. It's like it's working at half capacity. I've re-setup my network a few times, adding the wifi connector to a new bridge, i've tried disable all the other connections, and nothing changes... And when i restart my computer, the wifi connector software flips out and refuses to let me do anything with it so i usually have to end up re-installing it...

soo... sorry to throw this up here, just kinda getting frustrated with all of this, and i saw this guide and kinda hoped you or somebody would know something about it.

any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Nintendo USB Ethernet adapter will be like this one. BTW that one works with the Wii, too bad they only ship to the US and it's the only site I found it on.
