Smash Bros. Wii Line-Up Actually Cut Down. Sequel Is Discussed

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been causing a storm recently due to the release of the European edition last Friday, but fans will be saddened when they hear that the game they are playing is not what Masahiro Sakurai initially had planned. It is actually cut down from the planned project.
In this month’s issue of UK Official Nintendo Magazine, Masahiro Sakurai, the lead developer of the Super Smash Bros. Brawl project, admitted that he needed to cut out lots of characters he had originally envisioned being playable. This makes gamers consider the what-ifs, and could-have-beens considering many fans wanted and speculated Mega Man, Lara Croft, Ridley, and many other characters being playable. Now that this is out in the open, gamers have been pondering the different Smash Bros. that we never knew.
It’s taken over three years to make Brawl but I actually stopped trying to include new ideas early on in development. What happened in the next year and a half was that we distilled the game down, worked out which ideas we had time to include and which we didn’t. Sadly, we had to trim out many great concepts just to keep within the time constraints. I had a lot more characters, for example…but sadly I can’t discuss which ones didn’t make it.
- Sakurai-san
Even though it is sad that he cannot discuss these characters, gamers can make speculations as to what some of them were. Possibly Dixie Kong, Dr. Mario, Toon Zelda, Toon Shiek, Plusle and Minun (the cheering Pokémon), Mewtwo, or Roy from the Fire Emblem series.
The news that will hopefully leave you sighing with relief is that Sakurai-san has stated he would not just make a fourth outing with these other characters included and nothing else changed.
“There are thirty-nine characters in the game this time around and just adding a few more wouldn’t be enough to justify a new game in my opinion; I’d have to draw a line in the sand and have a new approach to make it worthwhile. As long as the fans enjoy it, though, that’s what matters and in the distant future, I guess that might be something I have to consider.”
- Sakurai-san
To some people, it sounds like Sakurai has plans for a sequel and will help with future installments to make sure they match he true vision.
If you want to read the full interview, which include Sakurai’s views on how the online system has worked out, purchase the new issue of the UK Official Nintendo Magazine which is on sale now.

Animal Crossing is coming. We know this as a fact. When it is coming, and what form it is coming in is a deeper mystery. The UK edition of Official Nintendo Magazine knows something that we all don’t know about Animal Crossing, and they aren’t afraid to tell the gaming world. To the right is artwork from the Nintendo DS Animal Crossing: Wild World game. In the UK magazine, this picture was featured on the “Coming Next Month” page. The little caption box in the upper right hand corner reads, “It’s been a while. It's time to revisit an old friend. How's your village doing these days?"
Those words; how they agonize and tease us. We’ll just have to settle for waiting though until the next issue of the UK magazine comes out (August 1st), but by then, we might have already heard something from E3. This picture and caption has gotten the Animal Crossing community stirring again, and now they’re ready for some more news! Prepare you golden shovels everybody, because a new Animal Crossing may soon be heading our way.

We first heard of this new Castlevania game from the magazine Nintendo Power a week ago. But this week Konami finally stepped up and officially announced this exciting title. This fighting game will let you have the choice of being good or evil, allowing you to take control of characters from all over the Castlevania universe.
Konami promises players that they will be able to slash, stab and whip players while using the motion sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Konami also said that as well as using physical attacks against your opponent you can use environmental furniture (or calling on the services of monsters) to pummel your opponent.
Don’t think the players around you are challenging enough? Then don’t worry, because you can test your skills online via Wi-Fi Connection. There’s also bonus content that can be accessed via the Nintendo DS Castlevania: Order of Ecclessia which will allow you to unlock bonus content for the game.
“We wanted to take this addition to the signature Konami franchise in a direction that really sets it apart from the previous Castlevania titles in the series,” said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “The Wii Remote and Nunchuck capabilities, along with the iconic characters, make this game the ideal entry point into the fighting game genre. This combination is certain to thrill old and new fans of the franchise.”
Castlevania Judgement will be fighting its way to North America, one opponent at a time, this autumn.

Call Of Duty: World at War to Support Co-Op and Wii Zapper

According to our friends down at Wiiz.fr, the Wii version of Call Of Duty: World at War will support an offline Co-Operative mode; this will be done using the standard split-screen view. Confirmed sides taking part in the game are the U.S. Marine Corps and the Russian Army.
There is further speculation that the fifth instalment of Call Of Duty will not be releasing on the PlayStation 2 platform, essentially meaning that Wii will get a "true" version of the game, which is very good news indeed!
Senior Producer of Treyarch Noah Heller, has also declared that the Nintendo Wii adaptation will fully utilize the Wii Zapper.
"It’s a special team at Treyarch - not some out-sourced team. Not some group living in another country. These guys live, eat and breathe Wii,” he said. No sniggering at the back. He went on: “They’re doing a lot of control work and developing a lot of special technology to make sure you’re able to find the enemy as quickly as possible, and we’ll be supporting the Zapper."
No word on the subject of online play just yet, but since network play has become the staple diet of so many Call Of Duty fans worldwide, I'd keep my head up high.

High Voltage Pushing for Voice Chat and Other Online Multiplayer Features in The Conduit

I'm certain many of you read the title only to think that there would be no way for voice chat to work on Wii when you consider that Nintendo has yet to create a headset compatible with the system. Well that doesn't seem to be stopping High Voltage Software from searching for ways to implement such a feature into The Conduit. When asked about the possibility of voice chat being included lead game designer Rob Nicholls mentions that the developer already has "some options to accomplish voice chat" and that they are working closely with Nintendo to get it in there. This shouldn't be too surprising when you consider games such as Rock Band and Boogie making use of wired USB microphones.
High Voltage also isn't ready to commit to using friend codes for online matches in The Conduit. While it certainly seems that it would be a cold day in hell before Nintendo allows a developer to include not only voice chat but also snub friend codes stranger things have happened and we can only hope they'll be able to pull it off. Sticking to the online multiplayer, the devs are currently aiming for a maximum 16 players per match but that's not confirmed just yet.
Follow the source link for the full interview which is certainly worth the read for any hardcore Wii owner not only anticipating The Conduit, but just looking for what could be a very solid FPS and online experience on Wii (despite a few spelling and grammatical errors).

Eternity's Child Coming to North America After All

Apologies are in order to all those whom we may have disappointed when we told you that Eternity's Child wouldn't be coming to WiiWare in North America. Turns out that Luc Bernard didn't know the whole story and publisher Alten8 has come forward to set the record straight.
Speaking yet again to WiiWare World, Alten8 reassured everyone that North America would indeed see Eternity's Child on WiiWare as closely as possible to the European release. So there's no longer any reason to worry as if you're a North American who's looking forward to playing Eternity's Child your biggest problem may be figuring out where exactly you're going to find room for the game.

Guitar Hero World Tour to Cost Less Than Rock Band

The video game industry is one in which fresh and original ideas don't stay fresh and original for very long as the second they've been revealed they're usually copied, changed, and improved upon by someone else to set their product apart from the other. Such is the case with the Guitar Hero series which was forced to reinvent itself following the success of Rock Band.
So what has Activision done to set it's rock game apart from Harmonix's? Aside from the raised drum pads and touch sensitive guitar buttons it seems that Guitar Hero World Tour could also wind up costing less that Rock Band.
GamesRadar got a chance to have the game demoed for them and along with taking a peak at the game's set list and Music Studio mode they were also told that the full band set (guitar, microphone, and drums) of World Tour would cost less than Rock Band. Considering Rock Band sells for $169.99 US perhaps we should expect to be spending $159.99, or hopefully less, for Guitar Hero World Tour when it releases on Wii this fall.

North Americans to Wait an Eternally Long Time for Eternity's Child on WiiWare

Speaking to WiiWare World, Eternity's Child creator Luc Bernard broke the news that there were currently no plans to release the super stylistic platformer on WiiWare in North America. Bernard says that UK publisher Alten8 currently holds all the keys when it comes to bringing the game to Nintendo's WiiWare service which could mean an exclusive WiiWare launch in Europe alone.
He goes on to mention that he has no control over where, when, and how the game is released and that everything is up to the publisher. Bernard was also quick to remind everyone that in North America you will still be able to get the game for your PC through Steam. Regardless, it will be a shame to miss out on a WiiWare version which Bernard himself said would be the best one to play.

Wii DVD Plans On Hold

If you are a gamer who wants to watch DVDs through your Wii, you're out of luck for the time being.
A Japanese newspaper translated by IGN shows that Nintendo’s plan for a DVD compatible Wii are on hold. The Kyoto Company’s president, Satoru Iwata, spoke on the matter at a stock holder meeting on June 27th. He stated, “With supply constraints [of the Wii] continuing worldwide, the priority is on the current model.”
Now it seems that anxious Wii gamers hoping for DVD compatibility will need to wait a while until the high demand for Wiis goes down. They'll just need to resort to the old DVD player for now.

PAL regions saw five releases last week, but nothing new this week. Last week North America only received two Virtual Console games followed by just one this week. Is this SNK sequel enough to justify a purchase for you this week?
Fatal Fury 2
(Neo Geo, 900 Wii Points)
SNK's second attempt at dethroning the current best fighter, Street Fighter 2, went better than the original. Improved controls, visuals and sounds made this a stellar effort at the fighter genre but continued to live in the shadow of Street Fighter 2.
