From Day One, Satoru Iwata, CEO of Nintendo Ltd, noted that the Wii, unlike it's competitors the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the Playstation 3 from Sony, would probably turn a profit. With the Wii being a sell-out smash success in terms of consoles and sales, what has become of Iwata's claims? Turns out, he was right, and still is right.
According to an article in Forbes Nintendo is making about $6 per Wii sold. That may not seem like a whole lot considering the system retails for $250 but if you realize that Nintendo has currently sold 19+ million Wiis worldwide during 2008 alone, you figure that Nintendo is sitting on $114 million dollars in profit. Adding in sales from popular titles such as Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Fit, The Big N is practically drowning in cash right about now. This has been a pretty standard fare with Wii since it launched back in 2006 with parts manufactures attributing as much as 40% of their profit to Nintendo and others seeing growth in profit as high as 70%.
For the past two years, Wii has dominated the console generation in both console sales and games. But how much longer can the Wii remain a sell-out hit? Will it last into the console's 3rd year?
